Very colorful and attractive film. The lightest of the Renoir films I’ve seen. Both in terms of mood, engagement, and just in terms of not having (or making) quite as much intellectual demands. For the most part, it’s basically Renoir’s version of a light romp as the story/actors are fairly simplified/stereotypical. Perhaps entirely by design. Perhaps because Renoir is making a film in English. I suspect it's one or the other, or both.

All of this being said, this is a glittering and other-wordly-of-the-set film and certainly was worth my time. In fact, the very end of the film (on restored Criterion release) is actually quite peculiar-surreal and not to be missed.
