Distance and time is essential to
the editing process and allows one to become impartial. For example, if I have
a baby and someone threatens to take it away from me, I will probably call the
police. That’s because I’ve only known him a few months. Now if I have a
twenty-two year old, and someone threatens to take him away, I will probably
ask if there’s anything else I can do for them. And so it is with anything you
create. You become immured with it, and cannot see it from the outside. But
time engenders the objectivity you will need in order to treat it fairly, and
if it so deserves, to let it go.
