it's funny- college really demarks technological change for me. viz. i did not have an email address until i arrived on campus. while there, as you say, everything was in pine and you could finger people and that's about it. and the summer after college i got my first cell phone.  it still seems weird to me that people would have email addresses before college. and cell phones before being done with college. so distracting. in high school we'd just talk on the phone, right? or do nothing? or, sometimes, just show up under one another's windows? that always scared me, but in a rush sort of way.
